Cotebrook Edward has been a much anticipated foal, and we waited such a long time as he was 7 weeks overdue!
His father is Moorfield Edward, the greatest Stallion there has ever been of the Shire Breed.
On the 24th April 2016, Moorfield Edward passed away peacefully in his stable after mating a mare just 4 hours previously. He was the grand old age of 24. Some years before, we had collected semen from Edward for freezing and following his death decided to keep the remaining stocks for our own use.
On the 24th April 2020, exactly 4 years after his death, Fiona gave birth to Edwards son.
Lady Fiona is a 21 year old Clydesdale mare who is the daughter of Collessie Cut Above, the greatest Stallion there has ever been of the Clydesdale breed.
She was very overdue, although our vet checked her several times. The birth went exactly to plan, and the foal, whilst rising to his feet and suckling very quickly, had a very low body weight. Whether this was due to Fiona’s age, the fact that she was overdue or maybe because the umbilical cord was very twisted we will never know. Fiona is very fit and fat but hasn’t passed this on to her foal during the pregnancy.
However she is a fantastic mother, has loads of milk, and her foal never leaves her side so I am sure that he will soon catch up over the next few weeks. He is black with unbelievably long hair on his legs, and we decided to name him after his famous father.
