This is Angels 7th foal and the best one to date! He is quite amazing and will go on to win Championships in the future. Angel had a perfect birth and Alistair, as usual, assisted. Within 2 hours Rupert was on his feet and suckling and exploring his new world.
Alas at 24 hours old he started bleeding from his naval.
On the advice of the vet, Alistair managed to stabilize this using cable ties but unbeknown he carried on bleeding internally, and the following day he became so weak that he couldn’t stand or lift his head, or suckle.
We thought his chances of survival were very slim.
Rupert Gunstone, our vet, was summoned and, not for the first time, carried out a near miracle. He wanted to give the foal a blood transfusion but who could be the donor? Not mum Angel, in case her blood was causing the problem, so we called on dad Leonardo and took 3 litres of blood from him to transfuse into the foal. Within 15 minutes he was up on his feet and suckling. Thank you to our vet Rupert, Angel and Leonardo for your help in providing us with such a fabulous healthy baby.
We really couldn’t have given him a more appropriate name, after our amazing veterinary surgeon, who without him he wouldn’t be alive today.
