The Shetland Pony is one of the purest of the native breeds due to the isolation of the Shetland Isles.
The harsh Shetland environment resulted in the ponies’ development of a special double winter coat with guard hairs which shed the rain and keep the ponies’ skin completely dry in the worst of weathers. A thick mane and tail give extra protection.
Shetlands have a remarkable strength and stamina with a general air of vitality and presence as demonstrated when Shona decides that she doesn’t want to be caught!!
Shona prefers the company of Shires rather than other Shetlands and you can find her in the fields at the top end of the farm.
She ducks under the fences and wanders wherever she fancies so don’t be surprised if you meet her in the woodland!
Shona is the oldest equine at Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre and has lived here since 1997.
